Past non-systematic studies of the population of the Azores Bullfinch Pyrrhula murina, which was considered to be restricted to a very small mountain range in a single location, considered its status as Critically Endangered in 2005. However, scientists, including Tiago Marques of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, carried out a complete assessment to find that the Azores Bullfinch numbers are no longer decreasing, although their natural habitat continues to do so due to persistent threat of invasive species.
