Professor Thomas Meagher of the School of Biology has recently been appointed as Chair of the Advisory & Implementation Group (AIG) for the NERC Thematic Programme on Mathematics & Informatics for Environmental Omic Data Synthesis, a five-year research programme to the fundamental knowledge needed to integrate large volumes of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic data into wider environmental analyses to address new research questions.
A major goal of the programme is to promote the development of omic informatics as a professional niche within environmental research via various funding schemes, including discipline-hopping to and from mathematical and computational sciences. NERC has allocated £4m to this programme.
